‘Working with Shame’ Series – Dr Tony Webb Webinar
This is an event for men and women.
Join Dr Tony Webb to explore the topic of ‘Working with Shame’ in an inaugural collaboration series between the Eltham Men’s Shed and The Melbourne Men’s Group.
This Shames Series starts with this online webinar (10 Feb), followed by an online sharing discussion (17 Feb), and then culminating in a face-to-face experiential-educational workshop which has already been delivered to over 2000 people.
This series allows participants to explore a different perspective on what is perhaps one of the most difficult, challenging and controversial emotions. Peeling off the layers so that this more authentic shame can be unmasked – and the result of this authentic display on both the ashamed individuals and those who witness it – allows us to see how shame could operate to restore and build the social connections that are essential for mental and physical health and a functioning community.
Dr Tony Webb has been active in Men’s group work since the mid-1990s including NSW Men’s Health and Wellbeing Association, coordinating an Australian and New Zealand Men’s Leadership Gatherings and many other men’s groups and diverse group work processes. His PhD exploring the social psychology of shame and its role in social problems of aggression/violence, self-harm/depression/suicide, alienation/isolation, and various patterns of addiction drew on these various experiences with men’s and co-gender community groups.
The experiential workshop on working with shame – seeing it as normal, functional, healthy rather than something to be avoided, and as the primary social emotion – has been now ben shared with some 2000 people in Australia and New Zealand, many of whom have adapted this to their work with men and boys, families and communities.
